Job Summary
The Waste Marshall holds a critical role in maintaining a safe, compliant, and environmentally responsible operation at site. This position is directly accountable for the meticulous segregation, careful handling, secure storage, and compliant disposal of diverse waste materials. All activities must strictly adhere to relevant local, national, and international regulatory frameworks, as well as Lonza's established environmental, health, and safety (EHS) policies and procedures.
 
Detailed Responsibilities
 
Waste Segregation and Handling:
  • Implement and enforce strict waste segregation protocols to ensure all waste materials are correctly separated into designated containers, bins, and storage areas according to their specific classifications (e.g., hazardous, non-hazardous, recyclable, clinical waste). All procedures in the waste yard to comply with UKSL-179 Control of Waste and Movement of Materials.
  • Employ proper handling techniques to minimise the risk of spills, leaks, contamination, and personal injury during the movement and transfer of waste materials. Training as a spill responder will be required and booked with Lonza EHS.
  • Ensure that all waste containers are correctly labeled with the appropriate waste type, hazard warnings, and date of accumulation, in line with regulatory and company guidelines UKSL-26806 Removal of Waste.
  • Organise and maintain waste storage areas in a clean, orderly, and secure manner, ensuring easy access for authorised personnel and waste management contractor.
    Monitor and escort Triton collections
Waste Volume Monitoring and Contractor Coordination:
  • Regularly monitor the volume and accumulation rates of various waste streams to proactively anticipate collection needs.
  • Liaise with the on site cleaning teams to schedule timely and efficient waste pickups and disposals, ensuring adherence to agreed-upon schedules and contractual obligations.
  • Verify that waste collection and transportation activities are conducted in compliance with all relevant transportation regulations and safety standards.
  • Maintain effective communication with the Soft Services Manager to address any issues, discrepancies, or special requirements related to waste collection and disposal.
Cleaning and Housekeeping of the Yard and Car Park area:
  •  Regular checks of the Compactors and monitoring of the efficiency
  • Sweeping of the car park stairs on a weekly basis.
    Collection and segregation of batteries from all collection points on site
Record Keeping and Documentation:
  •  Ensure that all required waste transfer notes, consignment notes, and other regulatory documentation are correctly completed, signed, and retained in accordance with legal and company requirements.
  • Assist in the preparation of periodic waste management reports for internal and external stakeholders, as required.
  • Maintain an organised filing system for all waste-related documentation, ensuring easy retrieval for audits and inspections.
  • Completion of EWRP’s for all waste related tasks.
Compliance Inspections:
  •  Conduct routine inspections of all on-site waste storage areas, waste handling equipment, and waste disposal procedures to verify ongoing compliance with environmental regulations, company policies, and best practices.
  • Identify any potential non-conformities, hazards, or areas for improvement and promptly report them to the Soft Services Manager.
  • Follow up on identified issues to ensure that corrective and preventative actions are implemented effectively.
Training and Guidance:
  • Serve as a point of contact for waste management enquiries from site personnel, providing clear guidance and support to ensure consistent adherence to established procedures.
  • Promote a culture of waste minimisation and environmental responsibility among all employees. 
  • The FM Waste Management Operative Training Toolkit training breaks down all of the information needed to complete this role successfully in one simple package. It covers everything about the job day to day, as well as health and safety training and information on protecting the environment. This training is compulsory and may need to be done alongside other role based training. Other training will be provided including manual handling and traffic management. All training is provided by Veolia in the form of Training Toolkits which will be completed before commencement of the role/duties.
Spill and Incident Response:
  • Be prepared to respond promptly and effectively to any spills, leaks, or other incidents involving waste materials, following established emergency response procedures.
  • Take immediate action to contain and clean up spills, minimising environmental impact and ensuring the safety of personnel.
  • Thoroughly report waste-related incidents passing all information to Soft Services Manager to be able to identify root causes, and recommend and implement appropriate corrective and preventative actions.
  • Ensure that all spill response equipment is readily available, well-maintained, and that personnel are trained in its proper use.
Health and Safety Adherence:
  • Strictly adhere to all health and safety regulations, company safety procedures, and site-specific rules at all times.
  • Utilise provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) correctly and consistently, as required for specific tasks and areas.
  • Report any unsafe conditions, hazards, or near misses to the Soft Services Manager or designated supervisor immediately.
  • Participate in safety briefings, risk assessments, and other safety-related activities as required.
  • Ensure that all parties entering the yard environment are fully compliant with all aspects of PPE.
Physical Requirements:
  • The role requires the physical capacity to frequently lift and move heavy objects, including waste containers and equipment.
  • A significant portion of the workday will involve standing and walking for extended periods while conducting inspections, moving waste, and performing other tasks.
  • The Waste Marshall must be capable of working in various environmental conditions, which may include exposure to outdoor elements such as varying temperatures and weather conditions.
Working Conditions:
The Waste Marshall will be primarily based on-site at the Lonza Slough facility, with the main work locations being designated waste storage areas. Due to the nature of the role, there will be potential exposure to various types of waste materials, which may include chemical, biological, and general waste. Additionally, there is a potential for exposure to associated hazards. To mitigate these risks, all necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided, and its proper use is mandatory at all times when performing waste management activities. Adherence to strict hygiene practices and safety protocols is essential.
 
Reporting Structure:
The Waste Marshall will report directly to the Soft Services Manager. This manager will provide guidance, support, and performance feedback. The Waste Marshall will be expected to communicate effectively with their manager regarding daily activities, any challenges encountered, and progress towards achieving waste management objectives.
